2085 Narrative

In 2085, the world has forgotten how to move. Bodies have become still, minds confused by technology and constantly distracted by a virtual world at their fingertips. Most jobs and day to day tasks are completed by AI so people seem to have lost their purpose. People stay inside all the time with no reason to leave the house and to connect with others. In the pursuit of perfect automation, we have surrendered the sacred aspects of life: the weight of tools in hand, the breath before exertion and the shared rhythm of movement.

Spatial Concept

This project reclaims that lost momentum. Inspired by the Aeolipile—the first machine to turn heat into motion. We build. We skate. We remember. The Department of human remembrance invites you to Papplewick Pumping Station to pull yourself out of your state of inertia and connect with your community through ice skating, a practice deeply connected to the history of Nottingham, as the site also is. You will journey through spaces with forms inspired by the movements performed in figure skating and finally, to the communal ritual of skating—where motion powers both the body and the space. This is not invention. This is restoration.
