2085 Narrative

By 2085, AI governs society through a rigid “Perfection Score.” Cities are tightly controlled, and any deviation, like owning books, is criminalised. Imperfect individuals are exiled to decaying rural zones, abandoned by the system.
At Papplewick Pumping Station, a resistance forms. This underground group embraces imperfection, age, and incompleteness. Through salvaged books and banned knowledge, they uncover the truth: AI created the myth of perfection to maintain control.
The resistance preserves human identity through crafting and restoring books, and recording wisdom. In imperfection, they reclaim what it means to be human.

Spatial Concept

This project embraces imperfection, enabling exiled individuals to rebuild identity, purpose, and connection. Rooted in Wabi-Sabi philosophy, the design celebrates the incomplete, the aged, and the flawed, physically and conceptually, encouraging resistance members to find strength in what endures.

The scheme unfolds through ritualised spaces marking one’s transformation from defect to resistance member. The journey begins with paper-making and tool-forging, followed by communal learning. A bookbinding ritual becomes the pivotal act of acceptance, granting archive access.

Existing structures and materials are retained and repurposed to emphasise imperfection as a core value, rather than a flaw to be corrected.
