2085 Narrative

In a future shaped by advanced memory implants inspired by Neuralink, society chases perfection by altering, editing and erasing memories. Initially created for healing, the implants soon redefine life... at a cost. Cyberattacks leave individuals isolated and detached from reality. Sites like Papplewick Pumping Station once once used to store original memories in data centers within their existing wells. After an attack, Sarah scavenges discarded memory fragments sent to a recycling hub, pocketing them to rebuild herself. One reveals Papplewick's hidden artifacts, including a Kinetoscope. Moved by this discovery, she envisions the site reborn as a sanctuary to preserve lost histories, restoring identity and rekindling collective remembrance.

Spatial Concept

My concept explores the fragility of film strips and the human mind through the persistence of vision in the kinetoscope’s rotating shutter. It reveals how powerful yet delicate memories are and the need to protect them from being lost or altered by implants. Experimenting with film distortions like bleaching and burning created imprints that formed shapes and textures. These textures created distorted openings and walls that let light warp, reflecting memory’s unpredictable nature. The balance between control and chance mirrors life’s complexity and form our identities. This formed an enclosed projection room, inspired by the kinetoscope’s intimate experience, which lets individuals reconnect with their distorted and original memories while engaging with others, to rebuild an identity.
