Cannock Cycle Centre

Project

The Cannock Cycle Centre proposes to redevelop the existing bike shop and add a collaborative area, integrating it into the topography of the site located in 1 of 46 Areas of Natural Beauty in the UK. This will ultimately broaden the mountain biking community allowing for the growth it has received over the past few years. Considering the sensitive ecology and landscape, the building will blend into the terrain with a ramp to allow direct cycling access onto the building. This provides an elevated start point to the vast mountain biking trail system, with a covered viewing area onto the site. It will utilise locally sourced sustainable materials to support, develop and expand the ecological biodiversity in the Cannock Chase National Landscape.

Research

With the growing interest of mountain biking in the last few years, the lack of a central location in UK for this extreme sport prevents further development. The problem with developing buildings in these kinds of locations is due to them being in ecologically sensitive and environmentally protected areas, such as areas of natural beauty. However, with Cannock Chase already having an established mountain biking trail system as well as other site amenities, it creates a perfect and central location for this kind of development. The research aims to assess various materials to provide the author with a viable solution to achieve a low embodied carbon footprint building, taking into consideration external factors such as the council’s local plan.
