NHS MEADOWS COURT
Wellbeing

Project
Meadows Court is a new NHS diabetes healthcare centre in Nottingham, west of Arkwright Street and south of Crocus Street (NG2). It brings together three buildings linked by a glazed atrium with café and seating, creating a bright, welcoming hub. Facilities include a pool, fitness and cycle studios, consultation rooms, therapy spaces, a pharmacy, kitchen workshop, classroom, and a research wing with offices, lab and breakout space. Designed using Revit, Rhino, Photoshop and D5 Render, the project targets BREEAM Outstanding with solar PVs, ground and air source heat pumps, and swale SuDS. Built on concrete pad foundations with a steel frame, the site includes a running track, playground, secure cycle storage and green spaces inspired by Scandinavian design to support wellbeing.
Research
This research explores the use of artificial intelligence to optimise solar shading in healthcare design, aiming to improve patient wellbeing through better daylight control. Focusing on a diabetes healthcare centre in Nottingham, the study uses Rhino, Grasshopper, Ladybug and Galapagos to simulate and assess shading performance. Static and adaptive systems are tested to balance glare reduction with natural light. AI tools refine fin angles, depth and orientation based on lux targets and sun paths. Insights from ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude support iterative testing and generative modelling. Results show AI-assisted design improves daylight quality and workflow efficiency. By linking performance and care, the research offers a model for healthier, sustainable spaces.
