• Quantum – AI Research Centre
Mixed Use

Project
Quantum – An AI research centre located in The Island Quarter, Nottingham (NG2 4LA), designed to operate autonomously while remaining publicly accessible. Blending advanced automation with civic engagement, it functions as both a research facility and educational hub, allowing real-time interaction with AI technologies.
Architecturally, it creates a bold dialogue between nature and machine, with the Nottingham Canal entering the ground floor to shape spatial experience. Intelligent systems such as adaptive solar shading, switchable smart glass, geothermal energy, and canal-based thermal exchange support off-grid, low-carbon operation. AI governs every aspect, including internal systems and autonomous transport for visitors.

AI-Driven Automation: Reducing Time and Costs in the Architectural Design Process: Enhancing Efficiency and Productivity
This research explores how AI-driven tools can improve efficiency, reduce costs, and streamline repetitive tasks within the architectural design process. Focusing on the author’s Major Study Project (MSP), an AI Research Centre, the study evaluates three advanced, free AI platforms: ChatGPT-4o, Grok, and DeepSeek. Using a mixed-method approach including a literature review, industry questionnaire, and practical testing on architectural drawings, the research identifies drawing reviews and regulation compliance as the most repetitive and time-consuming tasks. All three AI tools demonstrated varying strengths in automating these checks.
