Project

Gasworks Junction is an urban entertainment centre designed to support the regeneration of Northampton’s town centre. The development includes a food court and various entertainment spaces, catering to people of all ages. The design honours the site’s history, referencing the former gasworks that once occupied the area, alongside the restoration of an existing 18th-century building. With sustainability at its core, the design incorporates solar shading, hempcrete, and glulam materials. The aim is to attract more out of town visitors, helping to boost the local economy and revitalise the area.

Research

Tackling embodied carbon within the retrofit of historic structures.

This research investigates the retrofitting of existing buildings. The authors focus on the MSP site, which includes an existing structure. The study explores the use of various structural materials for retrofitting, including cob walls, GaK, cob with a timber frame, and glulam. Life cycle assessments (LCAs) were conducted to evaluate and compare the embodied carbon of each material, identifying the option with the lowest environmental impact.
