Nestled at the vibrant confluence of the River Chelmer and River Can in Chelmsford’s heart, this project reimagines a landmark music and arts hub for Broadwick Live. Melding the area's industrial heritage with contemporary flair, the design features robust brick facades and sleek black metal rainscreen cladding, capturing the raw energy of its surroundings. Inside, the exposed concrete floors and striking steel frame evoke a sense of authenticity and permanence, creating a fitting backdrop for artistic expression. More than just a building, this cultural venue is a catalyst for Chelmsford’s ongoing regeneration, seamlessly integrating with the revitalized Meadows Shopping Centre to transform the waterfront into a dynamic community epicentre, fostering creativity and cultural connection.

Project

Designed to be both flexible and immersive, the centre will accommodate a diverse range of events—from large-scale live performances to intimate exhibitions and community workshops. Its adaptable interior volumes support various configurations, allowing the space to evolve with its programming. Expansive glazing along the riverfront invites natural light and provides visual connectivity to the landscape, reinforcing the relationship between art, people, and place. Outdoor public areas surrounding the building extend its cultural offerings beyond the walls, encouraging informal gathering and year-round engagement.
