Mixed Use

Project
The proposed five-storey fashion house is a multifunctional design hub supporting creativity, sustainability, and education in Nottingham. Designed for NTU’s School of Art & Design, it includes studios, digital labs, galleries, cafés, and a rooftop restaurant centred around a runway space. Positioned in a city known for its textile heritage, it revives Nottingham’s legacy in fashion while promoting innovation. Built with a concrete frame and timber cladding fins, it incorporates recycled materials, passive design, and a green roof reflecting a strong commitment to sustainable urban development and cultural engagement.
Research
This research explores enhancing visual comfort through artificial lighting in the author’s proposed five storey fashion house. It examines how lighting orientation, spacing, colour, and temperature impact user experience in key areas such as the runway, sewing rooms, and exhibition spaces. A four phase mixed methodology was used: literature review, 3D modelling in Revit, immersive simulation in Twinmotion, and VR based user feedback. Results showed that white lighting with 600mm spacing offered the highest visual comfort. This solution was applied to the runway space to improve clarity during fashion shows and support productivity across the building.
