Project
Groovescape is a contemporary reinterpretation of 1970s design and culture, housed within the repurposed gas holders of Bethnal Green, Hackney. As ABBA Voyage prepares to relocate to Las Vegas, Groovescape positions itself as a permanent home for this groundbreaking experience in London. Groovescape also offers an immersive dinner-theatre experience where architecture, music, and social interaction come together in a multi-sensory celebration of performance and memory. Crucially, Groovescape transforms an existing industrial frame into a vibrant, future-facing venue. The reuse of the gas holder preserves London’s industrial heritage while introducing new cultural life to the site. It reflects a commitment to sustainability, adaptive reuse, and architectural storytelling.
Spatial Concept
The 1970s were defined by rebellion and reinvention. Society embraced personal freedom, the space race pushed boundaries, and design shattered conventions. Groovescape channels this energy, rejecting rigid forms in favour of organic, fluid spaces. Plush suede booths, curved fibreglass walls, and suspended ball chairs create a tactile, interactive environment. Guests can experience performances from dynamic, elevated positions, capturing the era’s fascination with movement, technology, and experimentation. A rich, immersive palette of burnt orange, deep red, and warm ochre evokes the warmth and vibrancy of the decade. Overhead, bold geometric glass cylinder lights refract colour, casting a groovy glow that transforms the space into a futuristic discotheque.
