Project
The Hearth of Newark is a civic cooking library located at Town Wharf, Newark-on-Trent. The project explores food as memory, identity and social ritual, transforming the riverside site into a shared place for learning, growing, cooking and gathering. Positioned beside the River Trent and Newark Castle, the proposal reconnects the town’s historic relationship with food, trade and community life through a public programme that combines kitchens, dining spaces, workshops, gardens and a recipe library.
The design is organised around the idea of the hearth as a civic centre: a warm, visible and welcoming space where people come together through food. A clear farm-to-table journey links growing, preparation, cooking, eating and exchange, creating a gradual transition from public riverside landscape to more intimate interior spaces. A timber structure, textured materiality and framed views towards the river and castle, support a calm, tactile atmosphere while reinforcing the project’s focus on community, craft and shared experience.
