Research
Precedent Studies:
Homes For Senior Citizens, is designed for elderly residents who can still look after themselves. The structure faces the Kronengasse and the old centre of Masans. At the rear of the structure is the existing old peoples homes with inbuilt nursing facilities. The new structure and the old form a loose configuration, a kind of suburban ‘farmstead’, arranged around a spacious courtyard.
Spatial Layout:
I found that I wanted the ‘Talking Chapel’ to be at the heart of the monastery but also to integrate the arm of the castle as part of the cloister, allowing a clear contrast between old and new.
Project
The notion of metamorphosis draws attention upon the two distinct sides of what it means to go through transition. That being the duality between two different stages of life. Although my thesis explores how architecture can facilitate and embody these transitions, it also highlights how two separate transitions can co-exist in order to bridge the gap between new beginnings and endings despite external factors such as depression and isolation. For the elderly, transition is used to pass on legacies but for new mothers it’s the ability to nurture these legacies for their children to come.
