GRAINWORKS
Atelier 02: Urban Monastery: a sanctuary of reflection

Project
GRAINWORKS is a music and making focused architectural intervention at Newark Town Lock that revitalises a semi-neglected historic industrial site by reconnecting the community with its music, cultural and industrial heritage.
The timber, flood resilient design emphasises sustainability and craftsmanship, while housing performance, rehearsal, exhibition, and community spaces. Overall creating a vibrant cultural hub centred on music and making.
My architectural scheme is inspired by The Great Gig in the Sky by Pink Floyd, using its emotional intensity and immersive power to shape a dramatic architectural experience. Just as the music creates profound lived moments through rhythm and feeling, my design prioritises atmosphere, sensory engagement, and embodiment over purely visual form. Through light, materiality, sound, and movement, the scheme transforms Newark’s Town Lock into a place that is not simply seen, but deeply felt and remembered.
