Project

The WaterWay is an exciting design along Newark's Trent River waterfront, welcoming all visitors to find the joy in cooking. Featuring large communal bakery and kitchens, with a smaller private kitchen for quieter cooks, & an onsite greenhouse, providing free ingredients & a place for green-thumbs to shine. The dedicated dining rooms on the river & the beautiful terraced courtyard at the heart provide the perfect spaces to enjoy your creations.

The WaterWay is dedicated to bringing communities together through adversity, and utilises state of the art floatation technology securing its safe use in up to 4.5 meter floods. The risen dining & greenhouse spaces will overlook the flooded courtyard terraces, allowing visitors to watch the draining, safe upon our balconies, & share a hearty meal.

Sustainability

The WaterWay uses a combination of flood resistance strategies to position itself as a 'last bastion' in Newark's flood zones, able to withstand up to 4.5 meters of flooding whilst remaining fully functional, thanks to its rising wing.

Between the rising wing, gabions, green walls, and stilted design, the project offers the least possible flood risk to the site, despite the development along a floodplain. The rising wing also features a heat exchange system in its base, heating the dining and greenhouse spaces from the river's energy.

The timber frame construction of the design also serves to reduce the carbon implications of the development, meeting RIBA 2030 sustainable development goals, then seeking to further reduce this impact with carbon offsetting and the use of solar panels.
