Sustainable Construction Centre
Atelier 01: Cabinet of Curiosities

Project
This project explores the integration of sustainable construction and modern technologies, whilst bridging the gap between historical and contemporary architecture in Newark. The project features a range of innovative, multifunctional spaces designed to engage and inspire. Demonstration labs allow for hands-on learning about eco-friendly materials and construction techniques, while workshops offer opportunities for both professionals and community members to develop practical skills. Co-working areas encourage collaboration between students, local businesses, and sustainability advocates, enhancing a hub for green innovation.
Highlighting environmental responsibility by including renewable materials, energy-efficient systems, and adaptive reuse ideas that maintain components of Newark.
Research
This project aims to address population imbalances and to boost the local economy by employing materials like timber and glass to sensitively connect with Newark's history. Aiming to highlight a respectful design approach that harmonises modern interventions with historical sites, stimulating sustainability, education and inclusivity. The design consists of its main feature of the atrium space which also acts as the main circuation route. This space allows visitors to interact with the building but also feel a sense of connection with the historic ruins. The primary use of glass is to sybmolise the importance of respectful designs and how we can embed history with the present.
