Project

Scentuary Temple is a contemporary temple-stay retreat set within the historic grounds of Newark Castle. The name of Scentuary—blending scent and sanctuary—reflects a place where aroma, atmosphere, and silence come together to create a deeply calming and immersive space for rest and reflection.

Inspired by monastic traditions and interpreted through modern design, Scentuary Temple guides visitors on a gentle "in and out journey” from the noise of the outer world into inner stillness, and back again with renewed clarity. Natural materials, herbal scents, and soft lighting shape a sensory experience that soothes both body and mind.

Scentuary Temple offers something essential: stillness, presence, and the quiet beauty of simply being at a time when true rest is rare.

Project

The Gatehouse is reimagined not only as a point of entry, but as the beginning of a curated spatial journey that gradually immerses visitors in the atmosphere of the temple-stay.

The design of the Gatehouse is shaped by three key concepts:

Scent – The journey begins with scent. As visitors enter, subtle aromas gently awaken the senses, marking the first step into a more conscious state of being.

Scenery – Nature surrounds the space. Framed views, filtered light, and natural elements create a strong connection between scent and the living environment.

Sacred – Toward the final stage of the Gatehouse experience, a sense of sacredness emerges. Through light, material, and silence, visitors encounter a quiet reverence before moving deeper into—or back out of—the world beyond.
