Atelier 02: Urban Monastery: a sanctuary of reflection

Project

Newark’s Lock Keeper’s Cottage was once shaped by movement, trade, and stories carried along the River Trent. When the railways arrived, that rhythm faded, and Newark lost part of its cultural heartbeat. Within the concealed space behind Newark Town Lock, a Writing Sanctuary transforms this forgotten site into a place of discovery and reflection. The architecture begins where most buildings feel like an end, in shadows and silence, where layers wait to be discovered. Wrapped by the site’s natural level changes, the sanctuary unfolds like scattered pages of a story, guiding users through layered spaces intertwined with an evergreen landscape. Through its veiled design, curiosity becomes clarity and exploration becomes disclosure, creating a sanctuary of traces.

Project

Writing and illustration have long carried spiritual qualities, rooted in monastic traditions where text and image were created together. Both become spiritual through focus and rhythm, qualities often lost in the digital world. The Writer’s Sanctuary reintroduces this sense of presence, creating spaces where writing becomes a mindful ritual. Inspired by Newark’s historic market culture and annual Book Festival, which draws writers, readers, and creatives to the town, the sanctuary extends this literary culture beyond a temporary event. Participants move through a journey of making and reflection, from crafting inks and quills to exploring writing and mark making practices such as sumi-e and shodō, transforming a forgotten site into a place of year round creativity and cultural connection.
