Project
Located on the site of the historic Newark Castle, my project is a sanctuary aimed at engaging with the
profound human experience of grief. This proposal creates a space for the community of those who lost
loved ones and feel isolated or unsupported, the space aims to help find solace, healing, and growth. Taking
inspiration from the contemplation and restorative qualities of an Ashram, the design aims to encourage
healing through meditative practices, communal learning, and introspection.
Contextual Research and Site Influence
Newark Castle, with its rich historical and cultural legacy, forms a deeply symbolic backdrop for this project.
What was once a site of power, and community, has now fallen to ruins, a reminder of resilience in front of
change and loss.
Project
Conceptual Framework and Narrative
The narrative focuses on grief as a universal human experience covering both the emotional and social
aspects of bereavement. The design acknowledges the stages of grief, offering spaces for solitude,
introspection, communal connection, and active engagement. The project aims to provide an integrated
program that weaves together meditative and learning practices to promote emotional healing and
personal growth.
This sanctuary reframes the Newark Castle site as a healing space, turning it into a haven for those going
through loss, becoming a symbol of hope, resilience and renewal.
