Atelier 02: Urban Monastery: a sanctuary of reflection

Project
This section represents the central focus of the Bukowski Archive. It includes a dedicated writing space and a lecture theatre, providing poets with areas to develop their work and engage in learning from others. This part of the scheme is directly connected to a café and social space, encouraging visitors to relax, interact, and take breaks from their creative activities. Outside, a small garden introduces a natural element, allowing the landscape to merge seamlessly with the overall design.
Spatial Concept
This space is conceived as a calm and contemplative reading and study environment within the Bukowski Archive, defined by a generous volume and soft, controlled daylight entering through high-level windows. Fixed seating elements are carefully arranged to create informal places for reading and writing, supporting individual concentration while maintaining a gentle flow of movement through the room. The restrained material palette enhances the shifting quality of light and shadow, while subtle partitions organise the space without fully enclosing it. At the back, a more private room offers a quieter, intimate setting for focused work, providing a clear contrast to the openness of the main space.
