Atelier 02: Urban Monastery: a sanctuary of reflection

Spatial Concept
My project began as a strong personal site response, that subsequently became the concept, boundary. I wanted to explore this atmosphere of thresholds within my Urban Monastery, deeply connected to the historical context of the site. Through physical modelling and abstract sketching, the tectonic overlapping form was developed, to spatially represent my concept.
This aerial visual of the site is key to understanding the tectonic design of subtle boundaries by using mass stone construction, which grounds the project on site, where the ideas began. I aim to create a feeling of washed-up stone ruins, along the river from the castle, that naturally form thresholds, which are then inhabited in a meaningful way, to create a wood working workshop, connecting surrounding Tudor buildings.
Project
This internal visual of my wood workshop space, which is my design's primary function, shows the strong stone walls, with gaps and openings that allow the lightweight timber internal finishings to form an inhabitable space. The joints of stone and timber are celebrated with wall joists, that allow the beams to be supported by the shear stone walls. As well as this, items such as the workshop benches and window frames have been designed to create a range of thresholds at scales, which allows visitors to gradually discover the intricacies of the design. The workshop will be used as a professionally tailored space for resident carpenters and craftspeople that work with wood, as well as hosting beginner friendly sessions led by the professionals that can educate on surrounding Tudor buildings.
