Bolts & Nuts

2086 Narrative

By 2086, automation has eliminated the need for human labour, while universal basic income guarantees material survival. Without work, struggle, or achievement shaping daily life, many people drift into psychological emptiness. Immersive virtual entertainment dominates society, keeping people indoors and detached from physical reality. Under algorithmic control, experiences are curated for comfort and constant engagement, weakening independent thought and narrowing perspectives. As art, craft, and collective activity lose relevance, public spaces fall silent and social life fragments. Long-term virtual dependence weakens both body and mind, creating a materially stable yet emotionally passive society — the conditions from which the Wanderers emerge.

2086 Narrative

The Wanderers reject passive virtual existence and seek to rebuild human wholeness through discipline, creation, dialogue, and shared life. Influenced by Greek ideas of kallos and agathos, they see beauty as the unity of bodily health, mental clarity, and ethical conduct. Their symbol, the bolt and nut, represents connection, mutual dependence, and collective strength. Living within a resource-controlled society, they reclaim abandoned concrete, steel, and discarded urban fragments, transforming them into spaces for training, reflection, debate, and communal rebuilding. For the Wanderers, reuse restores continuity between body, space, and action.
