The Urban Monastery at Town Wharf is conceived as a civic sanctuary and cultural archive, designed to mediate the historic identity of Newark with the dynamic narratives of its diaspora. Rather than relying on superficial cultural motifs, the building generates a sense of belonging through its spatial logic and tectonic choices.

The defining mechanism of the project is the architectural "aperture". This concept dictates the spatial sequencing, moving visitors from the hyper-visibility of the city into deliberate moments of pause and reflection.

The apertures throughout the building act as curated filters, framing specific views, controlling permeability, and dictating how light washes over the interior surfaces to define areas for gathering and solitary contemplation.
