Directed Canvas
Atelier 02: Urban Monastery: a sanctuary of reflection

Project
The project explores how a building can be a canvas for light and directing a user to slow down and take a moment of pause.
The building consists of a cafe, spa and spiritual space. Each have their unique ways of promoting slowing down and taking a moment of pause. Throughout the scheme, there are nooks within the wall for people to sit inside of and take a moment to appreciate their surroundings, architecture and sunlight.
The spa has smaller pools and pockets of reflection and spaces for the individual. This is promoted further with views into an internal courtyard.
Project
The spiritual space has been influenced and developed from a precedent study of the Bishop Edward King Chapel. The unique pockets for the individual influenced the pockets of reflection throughout this project.
The space has seating with a skylight, directing the eye up, away from our usual eye level view and towards slower thinking.
There are three nooks at the corner of the building, one towards the river, one towards the sunset and one towards the internal courtyard.
The space is also accessed from the cafe to promote visitors and to promote moments of reflection and spirituality within Newark.
