Atelier 02: Urban Monastery: a sanctuary of reflection

Spatial Concept
Sanctuary of Flow is a contemporary urban monastery designed as a calm and creative retreat within the city. Located at the historic Lock Keeper’s Cottage beside Town Lock on the River Trent in Newark-on-Trent, the project reconnects people with craft, reflection and community through the cultural ritual of henna making. Inspired by the traditional role of monasteries as centres of knowledge and making- the design creates a journey from learning and preparation to production, ritual, and residence. The riverside setting, close to Newark Castle yet surrounded by nature, offers a balance between movement and stillness. Through timber construction- soft daylight and sensory spaces, the project promotes wellbeing, craftsmanship, and cultural connection in a fast-paced modern world.
Project
The project is organised as a journey through the process of henna making- allowing visitors to experience each stage from plant to art. In the greenhouse, henna shrubs are grown within a calm natural environment before being harvested and moved into drying spaces where the leaves are carefully preserved. The dried leaves are then prepared, ground, and refined into fine powder, creating sensory production spaces filled with texture and movement. Storage areas hold the finished powder before it is mixed with water in the dye-release room and left to rest. In the application spaces, artists apply intricate henna patterns onto hands, while the exhibition areas celebrate the history, culture and craftsmanship of henna traditions.
