Luthier Haven
Atelier 03: Resonant memories: Echoes of the past, harmonics of renewal

Project
Luthier Haven, seeks to liven the Newark community with a dedicated musical hub, conceptually focused on themes of escapism. The site is the Town Wharf, beside the River Trent and opposite the Newark Castle. This building design is to respect the history and ecology of the Newark medieval town centre, while also incorporating modern and sustainable design to create an environment that will serve not just today, but the future as well. The target audience we hope to reach is the declining youthful population around Newark by providing an environment for the knowledge of older instrument craftsmen and musicians in and around Newark to be shared, adding an educational aspect to our scheme.
The full building programme includes two shared workshops with machine room, private workshops, a coffee bar for socialising, an adjustable inside/outside performance space, and teaching studios to learn music.
The program is focused on guitar making as they are an accessible instrument in terms of learning to make and play: portable, simple starting techniques, large musical range.
The dual elevations of polycarbonate and concrete highlight the escapism and seclusion to be felt in the building.
