Project
The Gamekeeper’s Sanctuary aims to transform Newark-on-Trent into a vibrant destination, where the generational gap narrows and memories and connections are treasured through the act of play. As younger generations embark on their journeys, many elderly individuals are left in solitude. This centre tackles isolation by creating inclusive, interactive spaces that foster well-being. Focused on haptic architecture and tactile experiences, visitors can learn, create, and enjoy board games, thereby deepening their connections with each other and the game. Inspired by the sustainable principles of monasteries, the design employs cost-effective and eco-friendly materials, as well as the values of modularity, direction, and connection.
This is the internal visual of the main events hall of The Gamekeeper’s Sanctuary, where natural light, timber surfaces, and a double-height ceiling unite to foster connection and warmth. The exposed primary glulam structure, with the secondary CLT structure, celebrates sustainable construction while enhancing the tactile experience, aligning with haptic architecture principles. The space invites all ages to engage in board games, promoting intergenerational interaction and well-being. The large, glazed windows offer visual continuity with the surrounding landscape and the Trent River, which gives a sense of transparency and openness. The layout focuses on flexibility and modularity, while the timber details evoke a sense of craftsmanship.
