The Symbiosis Collective
Atelier 01: SITOPIA: Feeding our future

Project
The Symbiosis Collective is a riverside civic hub in Newark-on-Trent centred on food, wellbeing, and inclusive learning. The building is divided into two connected wings: a private wing with calm teaching spaces for neurodivergent young people to explore healthy eating, nutrition, and sustainable food growing, and a public wing containing cafés, communal seating, and a 25-metre aquaponic tank that visually connects food, water, and ecology.
Spatial Concept
The concept of The Symbiosis Collective is based on symbiosis - the idea that people, architecture, food, and ecology should exist in a mutually supportive relationship rather than as separate systems. The project uses aquaponic food production as both a functional and educational feature, creating a visible regenerative cycle where fish, plants, and water work together to promote sustainable living, wellbeing, and environmental awareness.
