Atelier 02: Urban Monastery: a sanctuary of reflection
My project began as a strong personal site response, that subsequently became the concept, boundary. I wanted to explore this atmosphere of thresholds within my Urban Monastery, deeply connected to the historical context of the site. Through physical modelling and abstract sketching, the tectonic overlapping form was developed, to spatially represent my concept.
This aerial visual of the site is key to understanding the tectonic design of subtle boundaries by using mass stone construction, which grounds the project on site, where the ideas began. I aim to create a feeling of washed-up stone ruins, along the river from the castle, that naturally form thresholds, which are then inhabited in a meaningful way, to create a wood working workshop, connecting surrounding Tudor buildings.
