Sanctuary Of Flow

Sanctuary of Flow is a contemporary urban monastery designed as a calm and creative retreat within the city. Located at the historic Lock Keeper’s Cottage beside Town Lock on the River Trent in Newark-on-Trent, the project reconnects people with craft, reflection and community through the cultural ritual of henna making. Inspired by the traditional role of monasteries as centres of knowledge and making- the design creates a journey from learning and preparation to production, ritual, and residence. The riverside setting, close to Newark Castle yet surrounded by nature, offers a balance between movement and stillness. Through timber construction- soft daylight and sensory spaces, the project promotes wellbeing, craftsmanship, and cultural connection in a fast-paced modern world.
