Arch App Brief.

Year Four

Design Thesis.

Introduction:

The Design Thesis module represents the culmination of the Level 7 Architect Apprentice journey at Nottingham Trent University, showcasing each apprentice’s ability to undertake an extensive and intellectually rigorous architectural project.

As the final studio module of the MArch programme, it challenges apprentices to demonstrate originality, critical thinking and advanced design capability while integrating technological, environmental and material knowledge to a professional standard.

Each Design Thesis begins with a self‑defined agenda, shaped through research, contextual analysis and dialogue in consultation with tutors and Employment Mentors.

Apprentices interrogate contemporary architectural issues—spanning climate change, urban context, construction technology, cultural identity and sustainable development—through a coherent design narrative. Their proposals evolve from detailed site appraisal, robust briefing, and the early integration of structural, environmental and material strategies, ensuring that technical resolution is inseparable from conceptual intent.

The accompanying Technical Study deepens this integration, evidencing how environmental performance, sustainable systems and constructional logic inform the architectural proposition. Throughout the process, apprentices document their methodology in a comprehensive Project Book, reflecting the ethos of the reflective practitioner and aligning their work with ARB/RIBA criteria.

The projects displayed here summarise the main aspects of the projects designed by aspiring architects equipped to shape a resilient and responsible built environment.
